This is a new
chapter initiative to address the growing AIDS pandemic affecting African
across the globe. The FAROAH initiative serves as the chapter's
vehicle to address the needs of our community through fundraising,
volunteering, community awareness, and political activism.
According to Africa
Action
| "Years from now people will ask about AIDS in Africa—as with the
Holocaust or the Rwandan genocide—‘How could the world have known—and
failed to Act?’" |
| — Salih Booker, Africa Action |
Africans today are
fighting the worst plague in human history, and they need and deserve our
support. The HIV/AIDS crisis is the greatest global threat in the world
today—far deadlier than the threat of terrorism. More than 18 million
Africans have died of HIV/AIDS, more than 70% of AIDS deaths worldwide. In
2003 alone, nearly 3 million Africans died of AIDS.
AIDS does not discriminate by race, and is not restricted by borders, but
the fact is that it is mainly killing Black people, especially Africans.
Sub-Saharan Africa is home to just over 10% of the world’s population, but
more than 2/3 of the world’s HIV/AIDS cases. In the United States, HIV/AIDS
is the leading cause of death among African-Americans between 25 and 44
years old.
